Casa Rinconada is the largest Great Kiva in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, located near Nageezi, New Mexico. Built about 1050 AD, great kivas were used as places of public ceremony by the Ancestral Puebloans. Great kivas were always aligned to the cardinal directions. In the case of Casa Rinconada, a window pointing towards the northeast catches the sunlight at summer solstice sunrise and illuminates a niche in the kiva's circular masonry wall. |
